    The Season So Far:

Both these sides were competing at this level during last season’s forcibly abridged season – today’s visiting side from suburban Southampton were certainly in the title hunt before the campaign was cut short by Covid-19. They were flying high in 3rd place, winning 7 of their 12 played matches, albeit some 13 points behind runaway leaders Laverstock & Ford who were unbeaten at that time. Downton – today’s hosts – were having a tougher time of it down in 13th, but had managed an extra 2 games before the season was called off. Just 3 wins from 14 games, however, and they would’ve been looking over their shoulders at the 6 chasing teams.

Preseason, then, and Downton’s last 2 fixtures saw them beating Hampshire Premier League side Lyndhurst 4-0 away from home, before drawing 2-2 with Hamworthy United Reserves on Tuesday evening. On Tuesday 27th, Folland Sports executed an impressive victory over Fareham Town from the league above. Prior to that they beat Sway FC, of the Hampshire Premier League, 3-0. So, impressive preseason, but who will go home the happier side after today’s league opener?

    Corsham Town 1 – 0 Ashton & Backwell United
    Western League – Division One
    Saturday 19th August 2017
    Southbank, Corsham
    Attendance: 85

    The Visit:

I have to say I have been pretty lucky with the weather so far this summer. Today was no different and as I stepped off the bus it really felt like it was to be another excellent afternoon for watching some football. Southbank, home of Corsham Town is located a short walk from the town centre, in a lovely rural location just off a B road. As with a lot of grounds at this level there is plenty of greenery surrounding the place, which only added to the friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Bristol Manor Farm 2 – 1 Larkhall Athletic
Southern League – Division One West
    Monday 28th August 2017
    The Creek, Bristol
    Attendance: 249

    The Visit:

As if I needed any more persuasion to go to this match. Three day weekend, glorious sunshine and a new ground to visit. The icing on the cake was half-price entry on showing my train ticket. With Sea Mills station just a few minutes walk from The Creek – indeed one touchline is within spitting distance of the track – it would have been silly not to take this option. The undefeated home team came into this match sitting pretty in 2nd place after an away win two days previous – a feat even more impressive considering they were only promoted from the Western League last season. The visiting Larks suffered a disappointing defeat to Winchester and were looking to make amends.

    Brislington FC 2 – 1 Cribbs FC
    Western League – Premier Division
    Tuesday 22nd August 2017
    Ironmould Lane, Brislington
    Attendance: 63

    The Visit:

Ironmould Lane, home of Brislington FC appears to be perilously close to the main road into Bristol from Bath. However, once you arrive at the ground the traffic can’t be heard and you could be at any other semi-rural non-league ground in the region. The first thing that struck me about Ironmould lane was the fact that it is fully enclosed – even at the corners – surely a rarity at this level! A hotch potch of stands and a good amount of seating gives the feel of a stadium that wouldn’t be out of place a few levels higher. Not needed tonight but there is also a good proportion of covered viewing.

FA Cup – Extra Preliminary Round
    Saturday 5th August 2017
    Trowbridge Road, Bradford-on-Avon
    Attendance: 151

    The Visit:

What Bradford Town have at Trowbridge Road is a ground full of character, on two sides at least. Along one sideline is the main stand, split in two to accommodate seats and a covered standing area. Also present is what looks like a small pavillion, and sandwiched between these two is a large black shed the use of which I was unable to work out. At the goal end nearest to the entrance is a small car park where brave supporters can leave their cars. The club house is a short walk from the pitch, next to the bowling green.

    Fry Club 6 – 1 Stockwood Wanderers
Somerset County League – Premier Division
    Saturday 24th August 2019
    Somerdale Pavilion, Keynsham
    Attendance: ~45 (headcount)

    The Season So Far:

Fry Club came into this match off the back of two heavy losses, conceding 10 and scoring none in the process. Their only point so far coming from the opening game away at Middlezoy. Stockwood had fared better with two draws and a win away at Clutton in the bag so far. Would this be a sign of things to come?

    Western League – Premier Division
    Tuesday 20th August 2019
    Crown Fields, Keynsham
    Attendance: 101

    The Season So Far:

Keynsham Town were promoted to the Western League Premier Division at the end of last season. On the opening day they were handed a tough away game against Bradford Town which the Wiltshire side won 4-2. The K’s bounced back a few days later with a 2-0 home win over Wellington. The extra-preliminary round saw a local derby with Keynsham at home against league rivals Brislington. Town would have been disappointed to crash out after a 0-1 loss. Their most recent game saw them come up against Street who last season were voluntarily relegated from the Southern League. This match finished 2-1 to the Somerset side.

  • PREVIEW: AUGUST 2019

I reckon I find this time of the year exciting and frustrating in equal measure. Excited for the new season ahead, and frustrated by the drip-feeding of fixtures and cup draws, and frustrated not knowing – due to working shifts – which weekends i’ll be free and which i’ll be otherwise engaged. I also feel overwhelmed trying to decide on matches to go to, but I suppose that just goes to show the abundance of great football teams in the UK’s south west.
