The Season So Far:

Laverstock and Ford FC, one of the Salisbury-based teams in the Wessex League, are currently on a decent run of results – unbeaten since the 18th September in the league they currently lie in 7th position. Recent results include draws against high-flyers Bemerton Heath Harlequins, and Folland Sports who currently sit top and 3rd respectively. The only real blips recently were losing to Liskeard Athletic in the FA Vase, and being knocked out of the Wiltshire Senior Cup on penalties by local rivals Downton FC.

Today’s visitors to The Dell are recent newcomers to the Wessex League Infinity FC. They were promoted alongside Millbrook FC from the Hampshire Premier League for the start of this season. Presently sat in 18th position (out of 20), they are seemingly not having the best of seasons so far, and will be eager to put an end to the run of 5 consecutive league losses that they are currently on. Their debut campaign at this level got off to the perfect start on the Isle of Wight with a 2-0 win at East Cowes Victoria, but since then the team currently ground-sharing with Hythe and Dibden FC have only won 3 times in the league.

The Season So Far:

Both these sides were competing at this level during last season’s forcibly abridged season – today’s visiting side from suburban Southampton were certainly in the title hunt before the campaign was cut short by Covid-19. They were flying high in 3rd place, winning 7 of their 12 played matches, albeit some 13 points behind runaway leaders Laverstock & Ford who were unbeaten at that time. Downton – today’s hosts – were having a tougher time of it down in 13th, but had managed an extra 2 games before the season was called off. Just 3 wins from 14 games, however, and they would’ve been looking over their shoulders at the 6 chasing teams.

Preseason, then, and Downton’s last 2 fixtures saw them beating Hampshire Premier League side Lyndhurst 4-0 away from home, before drawing 2-2 with Hamworthy United Reserves on Tuesday evening. On Tuesday 27th, Folland Sports executed an impressive victory over Fareham Town from the league above. Prior to that they beat Sway FC, of the Hampshire Premier League, 3-0. So, impressive preseason, but who will go home the happier side after today’s league opener?

The Cowes jumped over the Moon

The Season So Far:

My second Wessex League game of the season sees me travel south to Moon Park, just outside of Salisbury. Home of Bemerton Heath Harlequins who I saw defeat Warminster Town in preseason. Harlequins currently sit 6th in the table and, given that the top 4 teams will be promoted (according to Wikipedia – i’ll try to find some further evidence), are well set to make an assault on the promotion places. However they come into this game off the back of 2 league defeats – their last league win being an impressive 8-0 home win against bottom club Folland Sports.

The away side, making the long trip up from the Isle of Wight, find themselves in 17th position. Despite this they should be reasonably confident of surviving given that, due to Pewsey Vale quitting the league, only one team will be relegated come the end of the season. A recent win against Folland, plus impressive draws against top half Downton, and Whitchurch United will give East Cowes reassurance that they certainly have a good chance of coming away from this tie with something.

Do Pewsey What I See?

The Season So Far:

It would be fair to say that Pewsey Vale haven’t had the best of starts to the season. After having made the switch from the Hellenic league prior to this season, a period of transition could be expected and they’ll see today as another opportunity to turn things around. 5 league games and just a single point gained, plus a home loss to league rivals Laverstock and Ford in the FA Vase last weekend goes to show that life in the Wessex leagues won’t be easy.

As for the visitors from across the Solent; well they sit 5th but have played more games than anyone else in the league. 3 wins, 3 losses and a draw suggest that they haven’t found the consistency they will be looking for in order to go one better and challenge for promotion to the Premier Division this season. The current ground share situation with fellow Islanders East Cowes Victoria may prove to be an extra challenge for Newport.
