The Wiltshire Senior League has, for some reason, a bit of a reputation for allowing teams from outside of the county’s borders to participate in its competitions. Letcombe, from Oxfordshire, join the likes of Kintbury Rangers (Berkshire), Larkhall Athletic Development (Somerset) and Faringdon Town (also Oxfordshire) in the numbers, after finishing last season as champions of the Hellenic League Division 2 Central. They’ve made a good start to the season and currently sit in 3rd position with at least 2 games in hand over their near rivals. Last weekend they were at home to fellow promotion hopefuls Pewsey Vale and won a ding-dong battle 3-2. They began the season superbly; winning 7 of their opening 8 matches. Highlights so far include a 7-0 win over Blunsdon, an away victory over high-flying Melksham Town Reserves, and a 1-0 defeat of my local team Trowbridge Town.

Today’s hosts Park United were promoted from Division One last season after finishing in top spot. Last weekend saw them take a break from the league (albeit against league rivals Malmesbury Victoria Development) as they strolled to a 5-0 victory in the County Cup. In the league they are doing well – currently in 5th position, and on a good run of results. They’ve not lost since mid-September and since then have beaten Melksham Town Reserves, drawn away at Pewsey Vale, and thrashed Larkhall Athletic Development at Plain Ham.

With 2 teams in good form meeting today, this is a difficult game to call.

Castle Cary picked up their first win of the season last weekend when a lot of other games were called off on account of the weather. A somewhat surprising 2-1 win over Peasedown Miners Welfare meant Cary climbed up to 13th position, but still in the relegation spots. Their only draw this season so far could also be seen as a poor result – a 3-3 draw at home to winless Stockwood Green.

Ashcott sit in 8th place having won 3, drawn 3 and lost 2 games so far this campaign. Last weekend they travelled to the North Somerset coast, and came away with a point after a 1-1 draw with Minehead. The stand out result of the season so far could be a penalty shootout win in the League Cup over Premier Division Fry Club. Ashcott currently find themselves in a rich vein of form having recently won 3 games on the trot. However this was ended by the aforementioned Peasedown Miners Welfare in the Cup.

A fact that might well give Castle Cary hope that, if they can beat Peasedown, then they can beat Ashcott.

    Intro

Not to be confused with Westfield FC from Woking and currently playing in the Isthmian League, or indeed with Westfields FC of Hereford and the Hellenic League, this Westfield plays in the Somerset County League. Based in Midsomer Norton, this is my second visit in recent times to this small town to the south west of Bath. I went to West Clewes to see Bitton’s penultimate game of the season away at Welton Rovers in October; sadly Bitton quitting the league as a result of increased travel costs.

Westfield haven’t got off to the best of starts – losing 7 of their 11 games so far this season. This sees them currently in 12th (out of 16) position, although it is a little tricky to get the full picture as some teams have played several more games than others. Their stand out result is probably the 5-0 thrashing of Welton Rovers Reserves. Last weekend the Crayons lost 1-0 at home to 2nd place Uphill Castle.

Minehead make the trip over from the Somerset coast today and find themselves in 5th place. It’s been a mixed bag if truth be told, and having played a couple more games than a lot of the teams around them, 5th place probably flatters them somewhat. A strong start saw the Blues win 4 of their first 6 matches, however their only victory since came last weekend at home to Nailsea & Tickenham Reserves.

Both teams will be looking to secure a bit of consistency and put a run of results together; my head tells me to expect an away win but I know better than to make predictions!

    The Season So Far:

Laverstock and Ford FC, one of the Salisbury-based teams in the Wessex League, are currently on a decent run of results – unbeaten since the 18th September in the league they currently lie in 7th position. Recent results include draws against high-flyers Bemerton Heath Harlequins, and Folland Sports who currently sit top and 3rd respectively. The only real blips recently were losing to Liskeard Athletic in the FA Vase, and being knocked out of the Wiltshire Senior Cup on penalties by local rivals Downton FC.

Today’s visitors to The Dell are recent newcomers to the Wessex League Infinity FC. They were promoted alongside Millbrook FC from the Hampshire Premier League for the start of this season. Presently sat in 18th position (out of 20), they are seemingly not having the best of seasons so far, and will be eager to put an end to the run of 5 consecutive league losses that they are currently on. Their debut campaign at this level got off to the perfect start on the Isle of Wight with a 2-0 win at East Cowes Victoria, but since then the team currently ground-sharing with Hythe and Dibden FC have only won 3 times in the league.

    Melksham Town 2 – 2 AFC Totton
Southern League – Division One South
    Saturday 23rd November 2019
    Oakfield Stadium, Melksham
    Attendance: 362

    The Season So Far:

This bottom of the table clash will be Melksham’s first game in 2 weeks after last week’s game away at Bideford was postponed due to a bad accident on the M5 preventing Town from reaching Devon. 7 days earlier, despite their best efforts, they were knocked out of the FA Trophy by Gosport Borough from the league above. After 11 games, Melksham sit 4th bottom of the Southern League Division One South with just 2 wins to their name, the last of which way back in mid-September away at Highworth Town. Town will hope that home advantage plays a part this afternoon.

AFC Totton sit 2nd bottom, also with just 2 wins to their name. Last weekend for the 2nd match in a row they scored 3 goals. However Cinderford Town, and before that Yate Town, scored more. With a midweek Hampshire Cup victory against Petersfield Town, the team from just outside Southampton may well be less well rested than their Wiltshire opposition, but will hope to make it two wins on the bounce. If there is to be a winner in this game, it could prove to be a valuable 3 points come the end of the season.
