    Previous Meeting: Crawley 2-0 Cheltenham

    The Intro

These 2 teams find themselves at the wrong end of the League 2 table heading into the New Year.

Cheltenham come into this fixture off the back of two defeats; most recently a resounding 4-1 defeat at Crewe Alexandra on New Year’s Day, and before that a home loss to Swindon Town. They have, however, been winning against fellow strugglers such as Shrewsbury Town on Boxing Day, and Barrow before that.

Crawley haven’t won since late October – a 4-0 win over another relegation-threatened side Bristol Rovers. Since that victory they have yielded just 4 points and remaing just 2 points from the drop zone.

    Programme: Didn’t buy

    The Intro

Both of these teams ended 2025 with defeat. Gloucester went down to Taunton Town and lost 2-1 in a game full of talking points. In fact the Tigers finished the game with just 8 players on the pitch in front of a bumper crowd in Somerset’s County Town. Evesham lost 1-0 at home to fellow mid-table side Yate Town.

City remain in 2nd place, albeit still 11 points behind Walton & Hersham, who look destined for promotion. They had been in good form before last weekend’s defeat to Taunton – a 6-1 victory over Hungerford Town came after a penalty shootout win against National League South side Worthing in the FA Trophy.

12th place Evesham United were promoted via the play-offs at the end of the 2024/25 season, and presumably will be pleased to still be playing at this level come the end of this season. As you’d perhaps expect from a team in their position, form has been a bit hit and miss throughout the season so far. Wins have largely come against sides towards the wrong end of the table, but an away draw against Poole and a narrow 2-1 loss at the league leaders Walton & Hersham show that United are no pushovers.

These 2 teams met back on August Bank Holiday Monday, and shared the points after a 1-1 draw in Worcestershire; an early goal from Sion Spence was cancelled out in the 2nd period by the hosts’ Andre Wright.

    The Intro

Frome Town United currently play in the Premier Division of the Mid-Somerset League, which has 9 teams competing in it this season. United sit in 4th place after a 3-2 home win over Wells City A last weekend. Today’s game is a County Cup game; in the previous round United beat Bristol and District League side Bristol United, while before that they saw off league rivals Chilcompton Sports Reserves with an impressive 3-2 away win.

Misterton FC travel up from the southern extremes of the county for this fixture. They are members of the Perry Street and District League Premier Division, and are sitting pretty in 2nd place at the time of writing. So far in the County Cup they have defeated Weston Celtic of the Weston-Super-Mare and District League, and Yeovil-based Wagtail Athletic. Last weekend, in the League, they suffered a disappointing home loss to Combe St. Nicholas Reserves.

    The Intro

Both of these sides finished mid-table in the 24/25 Ardal League South East. The Bluebirds finished in 10th place, and haven’t got off to the best of starts this time out. Their three defeats so far have all been heavy: at home to Cwmbran Town and then Goytre 3 days later, followed by a 6-1 loss at Abercarn United. In between these league defeats the Blues found time to crash out of the Welsh Cup to lower league Giants Grave. Things have picked up since then with a 3-1 win over Caldicot Town and then two draws with Lliswerry and Undy. They also remain in the Amateur Trophy with wins over Bonymaen Colts, Clydach Wasps, and – last weekend – near neighbours Nantyglo.

Brecon Corries ended the last campaign in 8th position, and this season find themselves a few places above today’s opponents. They do, however, come into today’s game in terrible form – having lost their last five in all competitions; including a 9-2 thrashing at Caldicot Town last time out. They defeated rock bottom Tredegar Town in their most recent win, with their only other victory coming on opening day at Canton. Corries made it through one round of the Welsh Cup, beating Cardiff Bay Warriors; but went out in the next, losing at home to Cefn Cribwr.

This looks like a tough game to call with two sides looking to kick start their seasons.

    The Intro

Amesbury Town returned to the Wessex League last season, after a single campaign in the Wiltshire County League. They finished a respectable 9th and will look to improve on that this time around. A slow start saw The Blues draw 0-0 with Clanfield on opening day, before losses to unbeaten Whitchurch United, and Ringwood Town put them at risk of going into freefall. The next game ended in a hard-fought away win at Fleetlands, before an impressive 3-1 victory over Hamworthy United. A week later Town’s FA Vase journey began with a comprehensive win over league rivals Blackfield & Langley. Last Friday, under the lights at Fawley, they secured another 3 points with 3 second half goals, before losing in the League Cup on penalties at home to AFC Aldermaston on Tuesday.

Last season Alresford Town finished an impressive 3rd, but lost in the play-offs to East Cowes Victoria, who would earn promotion soon after. They began this season on the front foot with wins against Totton & Eling, and Blackfield & Langley, before a 1-1 draw with Cove and then a 3-0 home loss to Romsey Town. Sadly The Magpies are out of the FA Vase; losing a five goal thrilled to early league leaders Whitchurch United. Last weekend they travelled to Ash United where they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat. In the League Cup on Tuesday they hosted Ringwood Town, but lost 1-0 – not ideal preparation for today’s match, but they’ll be looking to bounce back with a win.

    The Intro

Tonight sees the meeting of two teams that have consistently finished in the top half of the table, every season since Okehampton were promoted from the Devon League in 2021. Last time out Newton Abbot Spurs finished 2nd; 11 points behind Sidmouth Town, while Argyle ended the season in 7th place – actually their lowest finish since they’ve been playing at this level.

    The Intro

2024/25 was a season to forget for Swindon Supermarine, as they ended the last campaign in 20th position in the Southern League Premier Division South. Some standout results included a 5-0 thrashing of Poole Town, and a 1-1 home draw with eventual play-off winners AFC Totton. Alas, it was not enough as they finished the season 3 points from safety; not helped by a tricky run-in against the likes of Gloucester City, and Walton & Hersham who both ended the campaign in the play-off spots.

Barton Rovers – of the Southern League Division One Central – had a somewhat better season in 2024/25. They finished in 4th place, but fell at the first play-off hurdle; losing 2-0 to Flackwell Heath (who then lost spectacularly to Berkhamstead in the final). Their season got off to an inauspicious start as they lost their first two matches 5-0 and 4-0. In October a win over Stotfold kick-started a 10 game unbeaten run – ironically including victories over the aforementioned Flackwell Heath, and Berkhamstead.

    Intro

Today’s is the final game in Division Two of the Mid-Somerset League. Odd Down AFC Development are top, but just one point ahead of Meadow Rangers. A draw won’t be enough for Rangers due to Odd Down’s superior goal difference, so they’ll have no choice but to come out all guns blazing looking for the win today. This league of just 8 teams has been dominated by the two aforementioned teams who are 13 and 15 points ahead of today’s visitors in 3rd place.

Meadow Rangers got off to a great start; winning 3 (away) games in a row, before a surprising 2-2 draw at Farrington Gurney – the team who will finish 6th this season. And their only loss would be in their home clash with Odd Down Development. Rangers got their revenge in April, beating the Bath-based side 3-0 in the reverse fixture.

Frome Town United absorbed Mells & Vobster FC at the beginning of this season, although the firsts and reserves still play their home games at Mells Recreation Ground. The Reserve team lost their opening 3 matches before going on a run of 3 consecutive league wins. Ultimately the top 2 teams were too strong and left the chasing pack in their collective wake.

    Intro

The race for the Dorset Senior League title looks like it will be a close-run thing. Leaders Mere Town have played 19 of their 20 matches, compared to with Cobham Sports Reserves in 2nd, and Tisbury United in 3rd who have played 17 and 18 respectively. Mere are 5 points better off than Cobham, who in turn are a point ahead of Tisbury. The top side’s last game is against today’s hosts a few days after today’s match. A win for either side today would make things very interesting; even a draw doesn’t exactly guarantee the title to Mere!

    Intro

Bromley Heath United were enjoying a very decent run of form – only one loss in 10 games in all competitions – before losing narrowly away at Henbury & Rockleaze last weekend. Currently plying their trade in the Gloucestershire County League in which they are, at present, occupying 7th position. A month ago they beat Filton Athletic in the previous round of today’s cup competition – a 2-0 home win against the newly promoted side who are a place above them in the league.

Today’s visitors, Longlevens Reserves, are from the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League. This is one of the feeder leagues to the Gloucestershire County League, making Longlevens the underdogs today. Despite being 4th in the league, promotion looks impossible thanks to Tewkesbury Town’s phenomenal record of winning all but two games so far, and Whaddon United’s even better effort of only failing to win on one occasion.
