The Intro
Frome Town United currently play in the Premier Division of the Mid-Somerset League, which has 9 teams competing in it this season. United sit in 4th place after a 3-2 home win over Wells City A last weekend. Today’s game is a County Cup game; in the previous round United beat Bristol and District League side Bristol United, while before that they saw off league rivals Chilcompton Sports Reserves with an impressive 3-2 away win.
Misterton FC travel up from the southern extremes of the county for this fixture. They are members of the Perry Street and District League Premier Division, and are sitting pretty in 2nd place at the time of writing. So far in the County Cup they have defeated Weston Celtic of the Weston-Super-Mare and District League, and Yeovil-based Wagtail Athletic. Last weekend, in the League, they suffered a disappointing home loss to Combe St. Nicholas Reserves.
The Ground
Frome Town United have been dividing their time between Mells Recreation Ground (Mells and Vobster FC were absorbed by United for the beginning of the 2024/25 season) and Critchill Manor so far this season. The former hosts today’s game – a seemingly last minute change (according to Full Time) – and is the main recreation facility for the picturesque village of Mells. As is the case for most teams at this level, the facilities are basic. The pavilion building which houses the changing rooms is a bit of a walk from the 11v11 pitch here, and there are no dugouts. Fortunately today was a rare rain-free day. The game can be watched from any of the 4 sides of the pitch, and there is a children’s play area for those less interested in the football.
The Match
The visitors got off to the best possible start, taking the lead with the first real chance of the match on 7 minutes. Frome’s number 5 handled the ball, and from the resulting free kick Jonny Manley headed Misterton in front. United’s number 2 got injured in the battle for the ball and had to be subbed off early. It was nearly 2-0 to the away side 6 minutes later but a goal-saving challenge thwarted Simon Denslow who must have thought he had scored. The hosts had a good chance to level things up soon after. Good link-up play between Ashton Bryant and Kameron Turnbull led to the latter sending in an accurate cross which was headed just wide. Adam Dawe was well placed for the visitors when he scuffed his shot on 34 minutes. This allowed the home side to comfortably clear their lines. At the other end the ball was sent over the top with Owen Peet in chase. Away keeper Owen Male rushed out to meet him and did just about enough, but sustained a knock in the process. Into injury time and some good battling from Misterton winger Denslow allowed him the chance to fire a shot goalward from an impossible angle. Fortunately for the hosts the angle was in their favour and the goalkeeper beat the effort away.
HALF-TIME:
FROME TOWN UNITED 0 – 1 MISTERTON FC
Frome looked to start the 2nd half on the front foot, and with that in mind Ashton Bryant let fly from 20 yards. His effort was on target but easy enough for Male to gather. Misterton won a free kick at the other end. It was taken by Mitchell Hooper whose curling effort smacked off the crossbar. On 64 minutes Male was called into action again as United continued their hunt for an equaliser. He did well to save to save with his feet, the rebound was fired low but flew just wide of the target. The hosts would rue that miss just a few minutes later as Misterton won another free kick in a promising position. Right back Owen Abbott went on a marauding run, only to be unceremoniously brought down just outside the penalty area by Caian Gregory. The Frome man was shown a yellow card for his efforts. Centre back Sam Rowswell blasted the free kick through the Frome wall, with the keeper unsighted and unable to prevent the away side doubling their lead. It was nearly 3-0 to Misterton on 73 minutes as Alfie Robins hooked a cross towards the back post. It was met by Roman Wood but the substitute’s header was just off target. With 10 minutes remaining the visitors did kill the game off. A lovely curling effort from captain Adam Dawe out wide gave the Frome goalkeeper no chance. The hosts had one final chance to get on the scoreboard, but Kameron Turnbull’s shot was narrowly wide.
